CERAMIC VS. PORCELAIN TILES
For choosing the right tile for the space, it is very important to be aware of the technical specifications of the tiles. These specifications have a direct effect on the application, serviceability, durability and therefore the cost of the maintenance. It means that we have to have a preliminary information about the tiles and their types.
One of the most important specifications is the type of the soil, the soil that the tile is made from and would make Porcelain and Ceramic tiles. Although they belong to the same family, but they are more like cousins than twins. The terms “Porcelain” and “Ceramic” tiles are used widely and wrongly interchangeably, but absolutely there are differences.
Depending on the conditions of the space you want to use tiles, Porcelain or Ceramic tiles may suit your project. A qualified tile supplier always has a professional consultation for the customers to help them choose the right tile for their projects.
Technical Comparison
The main factor that makes a big difference between Porcelain and Ceramic tiles is the rate of water absorption. Porcelain tiles absorb less than 0.5% of water whilst Ceramic tiles will usually absorb more than 3 and less than 11 percent of water depending on their soil type and the procedure of the production. This is down to the stuff (soil characteristics) used to make porcelain tiles. The clay is denser and so less porous. It effects how the tiles behave, and what they’re best used for.
